This past weekend the extended family on my mother's side got together (most of us) for an afternoon, evening, night, and morning of festivities. This tradition was started a few (does ten count as "a few") years ago by my Aunt Mary and myself. It has been one of those hit and miss traditions. We do this only on years when people step up to plan. This year my cousin Ryan took charge of choosing the date, and I offered to help him plan the festivities.
Order of Events:
1pm: Kickball. It was quite hot, few people were actually here yet, so this didn't last long.
2pm: Movie time. The kids chose Grown Ups with Adam Sandler. Some watched the movie, while others helped to keep my kids under control while I finished up planning the events for later that evening.
4pm: Cookie making. This turned into brownie making when we determined that we didn't have cookie supplies. The tray of brownies was eaten immediately by those present.
5pm: Kickball. This lasted for about 2 innings before it was dismissed again. We ended up sitting in the shade playing games. "I'm going on a road trip. I can go to Mississippi, but not Alabama." Participants had to determine what the pattern was as we went around the circle. For some, it was fun. For others, it was infuriating!
6-7 pm: Eating and poem making: As more and more family members came after work, we divided everyone up into teams. The first objective of the evening was to compose a poem in honor of Grandma Bergman. The poems were read at the end of the meal. Many were quite good! We voted on one winner and moved on to the next competition... The picture below does not represent the winning poem writing group, but the best looking.

7-7:30: Minute to Win It games: Ryan gathered household supplies and organized a few games modeled after the TV game show. The first was tilt-a-cup. In this game, participants had to bounce ping pong balls into a series of paper cups. The second game was apple stacking. Participants had to see how many apples they could stack on top of one another. The third game was a partner game in which participants had to use a piece of spaghetti to carry an empty pop can in a foot race across the yard. Here you see Aunt Sharon and Bryce working together.
7:30: Feats of Strength. In this event, teams had to display physical strength in any way they wanted. Grandma Bergmann and Wally determined the winner. Below you see two of the Feats created by the groups. Aunt Margie's group lifts her high into the air. The winning group was led by Jenna Bergman in a strange exercise in which they laid on one another, supported by coolers, before the coolers were removed. Impressive!
8:30: Family Trivia Game. Each family member completed a survey that was mailed to Robin. Questions ranged from favorite book, to first car, to instruments they could play to impressive talents. Each group had to send forward a representative to display an index card with a family member's name as their answer to a question. "Which family member's first car was a 1979 Chevette?" In the end, all games were put together to determine the winners. Congratulations to Paul's Raiders, Kim Arnold, Mary Storm, Paul Bergman, and Brady Storm who won the overall prize! What was the overall prize? Pride. Bragging rights.
It was a great time for the Bergman Family!
